CHAPTER 21. THE RED FLOOD

The man’s name was Daniels. He had been scurrying through the hallways to get to somewhere there might be other people. His belief was that there was strength in numbers. But now, he was caught all alone in the base’s corridor. Well, not quite alone.

The explosion rumbled through the walls of the base in the immediate area. The metal of the door twisted under its heat and concussive force. Smoke and shrapnel clouded the immediate vicinity. Daniels was ten yards away, gaping in disbelief as the air, hot with the explosion, rolled over him. A piece of burning the steel door narrowly missed his head.

He shielded his eyes from the light of the blast, but there was nothing to protect his ears from the sound. The noise bounced and reverberated all through the corridor assaulting his eardrums. He instinctively backed away from it, but there was no escaping the effect. It didn’t matter. The noise and other effects of the explosion just down the hall from him were the least of his worries.

The space filled up with the howls and battle cries of the Kir’ji. While his hearing had been assaulted by the explosion, it was not entirely gone. He detected the cries of the approaching threat.

He spun in that direction and saw the first of them appear through the thinning smoke. Even at this distance, he could tell the Kir’ji were bigger than humans on average. This one was about six and a half feet tall and thickly muscled. Tattoos and scars crisscrossed his bare upper body. He was missing an eye. In each hand, he held a weapon. One was a spiky club, the other was a long-bladed knife.

And he spotted Daniels.

Daniels was paralyzed with fear for only a moment or two, then he screamed and ran away. The Kir’ji set off after him. More of the warrior’s companions poured through the twisted and broken steel doorway.

Daniels ran with the speed of a man fleeing for his life from an encroaching title wave. It was not good enough. The red flood that was the Kir’ji ground troops were more eager to catch him than he was to get away. He wouldn’t have believed this if you had told him but he wouldn’t live long enough to argue the point at any rate.

The Kir’ji warrior gained on him rapidly coming up behind him and then pouncing and tackling him to the steel plating of the floor. Daniels screamed and writhed under the Kir’ji’s mass. He tried to twist onto his back to defend himself, but the warrior thrust one hand down and held him in place. With the other hand, he raised the spiky club above his head, then brought it powerfully down on the back of Daniels’s skull. When the bloody deed was finished the Kir’ji warrior stood up again, assessed the environment, and stalked off searching for more lives to end. Others were right behind him.

“They have breached the facility,” Admiral Yamato Genji spoke to the holographic representation of Captain Alan Worthington.
